Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) are designed to prevent electric shock. If the GFCI detects an imbalance in the electric current between the energized conductor and the returning neutral conductor in a wire, then the electricity in that electrical circuit will be disconnected. This imbalance is usually a sign that there is a leak of electrical current occurring somewhere. This leak of current could be happening through the body of a person who is grounded and has come into contact with the energized part of the circuit. The GFCI will act quickly in such a case and deny power to that circuit within 25-40 milliseconds.

AFCIs and GFCIs are electrical devices designed prevent house fires and electrocution.

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) are a relatively new type of circuit breaker designed to detect non-working electrical arcing and disconnect power preventing fire damage to your home.

AFCIs are similar to the traditional circuit breakers as they both cut off electricity to an electrical circuit that is experiencing an overload. But, unlike the traditional circuit breakers, an AFCI will also cut off electricity to a specific electrical circuit that has experienced a non-working electrical arc, preventing a house fire. Non-working electrical arcing occurs where the conductor of an electrical wire, cord, or cable is damaged, causing the electricity to jump from one point of the wire, cord or cable to another point creating a visible arcing effect. This electrical arcing has been the cause of over 40,000 house fires, 350 deaths and 14,000 injuries per year and as of 2002-according to the Canadian Electrical Code in Canada-AFCIs are required in all homes and buildings that feed outlets into bedrooms or dwelling areas.

An estimated 4000 kids will be injured this year by putting fingers or metal objects into electrical outlets. Putting a finger or metal object into socket can cause electric shock and even a serious burn, many of which result in death.
